Let us face it. Our ancestors knew how to respect the earth. There was a tradition in the Orient, that every time a child was born, his family went and planted five trees so that by the time he went to his deathbed, those trees were ready for his funeral pyre. Nothing else was cut, ever except for purposes of natural living. It is only during the 19th century, that man grew so ambitious that he started destroying natural resources wantonly for his own pleasure. It is a historical fact that a president of America killed 2000 wild bison in a day on a hunt.
On the other hand, this same president decided that large parts of America would be turned into natural reserves because he had already seen the effect of industrialization, as well as depriving the land of all its natural beauties. Therefore, we are very grateful to President Teddy Roosevelt for giving us precious natural reserves as well as having a hand in the extinction of the American Buffalo! Nevertheless, one has to look at the environmental and social considerations of depriving land of its natural bounty.
Once the whole tree cover is cut down in an area, it is going to be polluted very quickly because there is no way in which all the carbon emissions caused by fossil fuels can be absorbed. Just go and wipe the leaves of a tree in a polluted area. You are going to see grime and residue on the leaves. It has taken the harmful carbon dioxide while giving out oxygen.
